Library 10 Final Exams

The Library 10 Final exams start on Wednesday Dec 8th and end on Tuesday Dec 14th.

Take your final exam in the library according to the following schedule.

If your last name starts with:

A-F : Wed 8th OR Thurs 9th between 8am - 6pm

G-K : Thurs 9th between 8am - 6pm OR Fri 10th between 11am - 2 pm

L-P : Friday 10th between 11am - 2pm OR Mon 11th between 8am - 6pm

Q-U: Mon 13th between 8am - 6pm OR Tues 14th between 8am - 6pm

V-Z: Tues 14th between 8am - 6pm

Check in at the Reference desk first.

The final is a closed book, OPEN computer exam.

Be sure you can:

1. Use the Library's full text databases to find relevant sources on a single topic.

2. Create citations following MLA format.

3. Define terms from the workbook.

4. Understand plagiarism and how to avoid it.

5. Limit to a particular type of material or format in the Library catalog.

6. Choose the correct Library database to use for a particular topic.

7. Distinguish between Primary & Secondary sources

Finding Current Events

For those of you looking for current events, use the Library's comprehensive collection of News databases: From the Library Homepage, select Articles and Databases, then select, News.

Proquest Newspapers delivers articles from 5 national newspapers, Newspaper Source delivers articles from 30 national plus international newspapers, Ethnic NewsWatch delivers bilingual news from ethnic, minority & native presses, and the Historical New York Times delivers national & international news from 1851 - 2004. Remember, you will need your library card to access the full text databases if you are working off campus.

Part 2 of the Library 10 Workbook

If you've already started on Part Two of your Library 10 workbook, you'll know that we concentrate on finding books in library & online catalogs. You'll use the Cabrillo catalog to find books and other materials such as DVDs or electronic books.

You can also search the Santa Cruz public library catalog, UCSC's Cruzcat catalog, and other systems, from our catalog page & choosing, Other Libraries.

Or, for those of you interested in history, try the Library of Congress's American Memory Project and view primary source documents such as manuscripts, sound and film.

Electronic Books from NetLibrary

The Ebooks from NetLibrary are a great source and are available from the Articles & Databases link from the Cabrillo Library. There are over 24,000 titles available for student use. The best way to search in NetLibrary is to use broad terms in a keyword search. Once you "open" the eBook, you can read, copy or email parts of the book to yourself.

Remember, if you are off campus, you will need your library bar code to access the NetLibrary database.

Finding Statistics

The easiest way to find a statistic on the Internet is to use the Library's page designed specifically for finding data resources.

From the Library homepage, go to Internet Links and choose, Statistics. There you will find web sites devoted to statistical information covering everything from agriculture, population, social issues, and much more for an international, national and state audience.

For example, peruse the CIA World Factbook, the U.S. Census Bureau, and Counting California.

Selecting Full Text Scholarly Articles

By now you have had a chance to experiment with the Library's Full Text Databases to find articles on your topic. An easy way to keep your results up to the level of academia is to let the database work for you.

Many of your instructors will require that the resources you use for your research topic be scholarly. This refers to the process of peer review; a requirement by professional journals that an article be put to a review board before publishing.

Remember, when entering your search terms in a full text database search, select, Scholarly - Peer Reviewed. This automatically limits your results to articles that have been reviewed by experts in the field of study that you are investigating.

Subject Lists & Directories on the Web

Most everyone has experience searching Google, however, there are times when you may want to search a list of sources that have been analyzed and gathered for you.
These lists or Subject Directories are usually a reliable source for searching across broad subjects and can provide inspiration for a topic.
Librarians Index to the Internet is one such directory. You have used that source in Part One. Lii.org is organized by librarians. Another is Cabrillo's Internet Links organized by our own Georg Romero, reference librarian. Subject Directories can be found virtually anywhere including instructor homepages from other colleges and universities and may provide you with a wealth of information.

Choosing a research topic

Sometimes the most difficult step is the first step: choosing what to write about.
Many instructors are having you think about the future of the environment and our society. Here from PBS, the Public Broadcast Station, is a link to their series, Journey to Planet Earth. Take a few minutes to browse the episode descriptions and the commentaries from experts. It might help get your creative juices going and give you an idea for an interesting topic.

Welcome Students,

Library 10 is a 1 unit, workbook & online based course designed to improve your research skills.

Research is a journey that can be fulfilling, enjoyable and enlightening. During the semester I will be writing and posting to this blog in order to assist you in finding quality resources for your research. I hope you will use the suggestions and enjoy the Web sites.

Keep an open mind while interacting with your instructors, fellow students and the community. Knowledge can be empowering -- it is the only possession you can keep forever.

To complete Library 10 you will need:
1. The Library 10 workbook. Purchase at the Bookstore or the College Bank ($12 +tax). Bring your receipt to the Library Reference desk to pick up the workbook.
2. A library card. Available free at the Library Circulation desk (bring your driver's license or student activity card).
3. A computer with Internet access. There are tutorials located on the Library homepage that support the lessons in the workbook. Computers are available in the Library or at the Computer Technology Center (CTC), building 1400. You may also work from home on your own computer, or bring your laptop to campus.
4. A network account. To work on a campus computer, bring your student ID number to the Library or CTC - You will need your ID to create your network login & password. Ask a librarian for assistance.

The due dates are:
Part One Answer Packet: Friday, Oct 1st
Part Two Answer Packet: Friday, Nov 5th
Final Exam: Wednesday Dec 8th to Tuesday Dec. 14th

CQ Researcher(Congressional Quarterly) is a great source for finding topics on current social issues. CQ offers "original, comprehensive in-depth and unbiased coverage of health, social trends, criminal justice, international affairs, education, the environment, technology, and the economy."
From the Library homepage choose>Full Text Articles>CQ Researcher. Browse by Topic, Date, Pro/Con arguments and more.
This is a great place to start if you are still looking for a suitable topic.

Library 10 Finals will begin Wednesday, May 27th and run through Tuesday, June 2nd. Students, please pick up your completed workbooks from the Reference Desk before that time.

Studying for the Final exam:

Read & review your workbook for mistakes you might have made.

Study the Review Exercises at the end of Part One & Part Two. Questions from these exercises will be asked on the Final.

Know how to find a variety of sources on a single topic.

Take a look at Appendix A, a selection of MLA citation examples. This will be given to you during the final.
Ask us to clarify anything you do not understand before taking the final.

Go to the Reference desk at the Library between May 27th and June 2nd when you are ready to take the final. You are allowed 2 hours for the exam.

Citing Sources

Once we find an online or print source to use in our research papers, we must cite the work. We give credit to an author or artist by creating a Works Cited List or other type of resource list. That way, anyone reading your work can track down the sources you used. The Library 10 workbook gives examples of MLA format for a variety of sources. Or, take advantage of the MLA Formatting and Style Guide from the Perdue University Writing Lab.
